গ্রেট ব্রিটেন
দ্য গ্রেট ব্রিটেন, বা ব্রিটেন , হল মহাদেশীয় ইউরোপের উত্তর-পশ্চিম উপকূল থেকে কিছু দূরে উত্তর আটলান্টিক মহাসাগরে অবস্থিত একটি দ্বীপ। স্কটল্যান্ড, ইংল্যান্ড, ওয়েলস কে একসাথে গ্রেট ব্রিটেন বলা হয়। উত্তরী আয়ারল্যান্ড যুক্তরাজ্যেরদেশ হলে গ্রেট ব্রিটেনের অন্তর্গত নয়। এই দ্বীপের আয়তন । এটি ব্রিটিশ দ্বীপপুঞ্জ তথা ইউরোপের বৃহত্তম দ্বীপ এবং বিশ্বের নবম বৃহত্তম দ্বীপ। ২০১১ সালের জনগণনা অনুসারে এই দ্বীপের জনসংখ্যা ৬১,০০০,০০০। ইন্দোনেশিয়ার জাভা ও জাপানের হোনশুর পরেই এটি বিশ্বের তৃতীয় সর্বাধিক জনবহুল দ্বীপ। গ্রেট ব্রিটেনকে ঘিরে রয়েছে ১০০০টিরও বেশি ছোটো দ্বীপ। আয়ারল্যান্ড দ্বীপটি এই দ্বীপের পশ্চিম দিকে অবস্থিত।এই দ্বীপটি গ্রেট ব্রিটেন ও উত্তরী আয়ারল্যান্ডের যুক্তরাজ্যের অঙ্গ। দ্বীপটি ইংল্যান্ড, স্কটল্যান্ড, ওয়েলস—এই তিনটি অঞ্চলে বিভক্ত। এই চার অঞ্চলের রাজধানী যথাক্রমে লন্ডন, এডিনবরা, কার্ডিফ । রাজনৈতিকভাবে, গ্রেট ব্রিটেন বলতে ইংল্যান্ড, স্কটল্যান্ড, ওয়েলস এই অঞ্চলের অন্তর্ভুক্ত পার্শ্ববর্তী দ্বীপগুলিকে বোঝায়। whereas the Cambridge Guide to English Usage gives ''Britain'' as "familiar shorthand for ''Great Britain'', the island which geographically contains England, Wales and Scotland"}}
গ্রেট ব্রিটেন রাজ্যটি ১৭০৭ সালের ইউনিয়ন আইন বলে স্কটল্যান্ড রাজ্য ও ইংল্যান্ড রাজ্যের (যা অধুনা ইংল্যান্ড ও ওয়েলস নিয়ে গঠিত ছিল) সঙ্গে যুক্ত হয়। এই ঘটনার প্রায় ১০০ বছর আগে, ১৬০৩ সালে, স্কটিশ রাজা ষষ্ঠ জেমস ইংল্যান্ডের রাজা হয়েছিলেন। কিন্তু ১৭০৭ সালেই প্রথম দুই দেশের পার্লামেন্ট সংযুক্ত রাজ্য গঠনের ব্যাপারে একমত হয়। এরপর ১৮০১ সালের ইউনিয়ন আইন বলে পার্শ্ববর্তী আয়ারল্যান্ড রাজ্য গ্রেট ব্রিটেনের অন্তর্ভুক্ত হয়। ১৯২২ সালে আয়ারল্যান্ডের ছয় ভাগের পাঁচ ভাগ অঞ্চল নিয়ে আয়ারল্যান্ড প্রজাতন্ত্র গঠিত হলে যুক্তরাজ্যের নাম হয় গ্রেট ব্রিটেন ও উত্তর আয়ারল্যান্ড যুক্তরাজ্য।
ব্রিটেনের বিচারব্যবস্থা উপর্যুক্ত ভূমিকা পালনের পাশাপাশি প্রশাসনিক কর্তৃপক্ষের উপর নিয়ন্ত্রণমূলক কিছু ভূমিকা পালন করে থাকে। প্রসঙ্গত উল্লেখ করা দরকার যে, শাসন বিভাগীয় কর্তৃপক্ষের উপর ব্রিটেনে বিচার বিভাগের এ নিয়ন্ত্রণ অবাধ বা সীমাহীন নয়। ব্রিটেনে পার্লামেন্টের সার্বভৌমত্ব স্বীকৃত ও সুপ্রতিষ্ঠিত। তাই ব্রিটেনে বিচার বিভাগকে পার্লামেন্ট প্রণীত আইনের পরিধির মধ্যে থেকে কাজ করতে হয়। উইকিপিডিয়া দ্বারা উপলব্ধ
