Kitaka, Karen Caroline Anxiety disorders Undergraduate university students Kenya Masters Thesis ABSTRACT This research aimed at evaluating anxiety disorders among Daystar University’s undergraduate students, Kenya. The specific objectives were to: determine the prevalence of anxiety disorders; investigate the precipitating factors of anxiety disorders; and to establish the anxiety coping mechanisms used by undergraduate students at Daystar University, Kenya. Data was collected using a researcher’s developed questionnaire that adopted the SCAARED to assess the prevalence of anxiety disorders among the respondents. 400 respondents were recruited from the seven schools at Daystar University, and were drawn from each of the schools without specifying their departments. Qualitative data was categorized and structured for content analysis according to themes. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used in the study. The socio-demographic information of the respondents was described using both descriptive and inferential statistics such as chi-square to ascertain the degree of significance between the study's variables. 320(80%) of the respondents scored ≥3 on the specific items to measure separation anxiety. 301(75.2%) of the respondents scored ≥5 on items that were measuring panic/somatic disorder while only 99(24.8%) scored <5. 58(89.5%) of the respondents scored ≥7 on the specific items to measure social phobia. Only 42(10.5%) of the respondents scored <7 indicating that they didn’t meet the criteria for social phobia. The increase in academic demands, including group and individual presentations, has led to heightened anxiety among students due to the fear of judgment and criticism. Statistically significant differences (p=0.000) were observed in all four anxiety-related disorders. Daystar University 2024-04-29T13:06:07Z 2024-04-29T13:06:07Z 2023-10 Thesis Kitaka, K.
