Aseka, Mary Anxiety Performance Adolescents Master Thesis ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to examine how underlying factors associated with anxiety influence educational outcomes among adolescents in selected public county schools in Makadara sub–County, Nairobi County. Its objectives were to; assess the prevalence of anxiety among adolescents in selected public county schools, investigate the relationship between anxiety and demographic characteristics among adolescents in selected public county schools, analyze the factors that precipitate the development of anxiety among adolescents in selected public county schools and examine indicators associated with anxiety among adolescents in selected public county schools. The study adopted the cognitive appraisal theory and control-value theory. The study used a descriptive research design. A stratified sampling technique was used to select a sample size of 376 respondents. A standard Screen for Child Anxiety and Related Disorder (SCARED) anxiety screening questionnaire was used in data collection. The study revealed that there were more cases of anxiety among female than male students and that there were variations in the level of anxiety from mild, moderate, to severe anxiety 21.3% of female students reported mild anxiety, 22.1% reported moderate anxiety and 10.7% had severe anxiety. At the same time in the boys 31.1% had mild anxiety, 9.0% had moderate anxiety, 5.7% had severe anxiety which differed by age, gender, and level of study. The study concluded that anxiety is a prevalent mental health condition among adolescents in public secondary schools.
