Mephis Nyanchoka Kamanda Masters Thesis ABSTRACT The main aim of the study was to establish the association between single parenthood status and selected psychiatric disorders among outpatients at the Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital, Nairobi County, Kenya. The objectives of the study were to establish the prevalence, to analyze the psychosocial effects, to analyze the severity of selected psychiatric disorders; (SUDs), Anxiety and MDD and to find out if there were associations between single parenthood status and selected psychiatric disorders among outpatients. The Social learning theory and the psychosocial theory were utilized in the study. The correlational study had participants purposively selected from five clinics and the casualty. Each clinic, according to gender and ward allocated on the first day took place at on particular days of the week. From 950 records screened, a sample of 270 rounded off from 269 participants were recruited into the study. There were 27 participants from Mbagathi hospital psychiatric unit who participated in a pretesting exercise. Mbagathi was selected because it had similar features as the study location. The study utilized the mixed data collection methods; qualitative and quantitative. The researcher developed a questionnaire with had four sections which w was used to collect data and three psychological tests were used on the participants depending on their diagnosis. The ASSIST was used for SUD, BDI was used for MDD and BAI was used for anxiety disorders. Confidentiality was adhered to and participants were informed of their rights to withdraw from the study at any time of the study. Out of the 950 records screened, 270 participated in the study. From the results, psychosis (p=0.122, 2 tailed); respondent’s family single parenthood status and anxiety (p=0.393, 2 tailed); respondent’s family single parenthood status and self-esteem (p=0.393, 2 tailed); respondent’s family single parenthood status and child developmental challenges (p=0.146, 2 tailed), meaning that the study was statistically significant. The recommendations had that those in this single parenthood families be offered psychosocial therapy during and after the conversion. The study concluded that there was an association between single parenthood status and psychiatric disorders among outpatients at the Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital.
