Through the 1960s, Boone was one of the most popular entertainers in the United States, becoming a teen idol as an alternative to the perceived hedonism of rock and roll, due to his activities as singer, writer, actor and religious motivational speaker. In 1957, at the age of 23, Boone commenced a half-hour ABC variety television series, ''The Pat Boone Chevy Showroom'', which aired 115 episodes (1957–1960). Stars including Cliff Richard, Nat King Cole, Edie Adams, Andy Williams, Pearl Bailey, and Johnny Mathis made appearances. His cover versions of rhythm and blues hits had a noticeable effect on the development of the broad popularity of rock and roll.
